Keeping it simple while using bright colors is the perfect way to learn the basics needed in oil painting. The leaves are the biggest lesson, teaching how to blend. The key is the right amount of paint and the right amount of pressure on the brush. The cherries use the same skill but are more difficult because of their round shape.
