There is something elegant about a simple design. Strong value change gives drama to even an ordinary subject matter. As I see it, this is a bowl of tears waiting to be shed. We are at the moment safe from the smell, yet our imagination takes us there. We can feel the texture of the transparent skins; thin, brittle and dull. In contrast, the bowl feels solid and shiny, a direct opposite of the onions. The bowl has a wonderful pattern of darks and lights, a challenge of its own. The simple background allows the texture of the onions and the bowl to be the focus of our painting. Enjoy!
